This is my nth game jam... I sort of stopped keeping track unfortunately. The Ludum dare is always my favorite and I've participated in an LD event every year for **11** years. Ah, so many good, stressed out memories. 
Over the years, there have been things that have stood out: I usually don't need a full 48 hours, I always end up with more work than expected, and my "Fun" rating is always one of the lowest... 🥲
I never admitted to being _good_ at making jam games, but I am experienced. 

In my experience, there are 5 learnings that I wanted to share. These can help in places outside of jams, especially in the context of the professional world. 

### 1. **You don't actually need 48 hours. Get sleep. Live your life. Find a balance, don't celebrate burnout.** 
Jams are a great time to practice a lot of skills. Time management and work/life balance can be skills to practice as well. Learning to manage time can be just as beneficial as learning a programming/art  skill. 


### 2. **Scope to one singular game mechanic/feature, and prioritize off of that. Never take more than twice as long as you initially expected. It's better to abandon one aspect than run out of time with no finished game.** 
If you get stuck on something, zoom out and check your priorities. You might need to just move on. Make and update a to-do list periodically, and when you get stuck, check back with the list and make sure you always have the full view of the project in the back of your mind. 


### 3. **Practice with your tools. Don't learn a new tool the weekend of.** 
Game jams are a great playground to learn. But I would recommend at the very least doing intro tutorials for all of the tools you plan on using ahead of time. You don't want to get stuck on export settings with 20 minutes left to go. 


### 4. **Develop a personal asset library**
That list of unfinished projects you have? use it. Organize it, use it for inspiration. IF you have a texture that you like, or a model that fits well with anything, keep it in a safe place and make note of it. 


### 5. **It may be boring, but do a retro.** 
You don't need to share it but for your own sake, write what you did well, what you could improve for next time.  Game Jams are an opportunity for learning.


### 6. **BONUS TIP** 
If your goal is to get the most people possible to play your game, please please please export to a web GL build. I don't like downloading random people's executables onto my machine. I hope these tips help anyone who is new, and looking for ways to improve their jamming. I am by no means an expert, but I have progressively gotten more out of these jams over the years, even with less time and energy.

5 Game Jam Tips from an old Pro

_This is from a series of post mortems I'll be doing on my game from the [Ludum Dare](https://ldjam.com). _ 

For my game, I wanted to make something with racing. I was a little fixated on that, since I made an arcade racer with the theme sort of shoehorned in. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to make tracks, manage progress on the track, record lap times, etc. Fortunately, I had a really good place to start. 

I watched this [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saAQNRSYU9k) from Sebastian Lange years ago and was enamored.  The ability to dynamically generate road like curves on the fly in unity was exciting, because at the time, I really had no idea how to make roads for a racing game in unity other than hand make it. This showed that it was possible to do all sorts of fun designs and dynamic tracks. I wrote code that used his Unity plugin several years ago and made a little demo that allowed me to generate tracks from a JSON file. 

It's great and all to make a mesh that looks like a track, but there are no rules for how that road should work. How do you know if you're cutting corners? how do you know if you completed a lap? 

### Checkpoints
I updated the code from Lange's generator to add a game object along the path created. I created a prefab with a trigger box collider and fence pieces and named them iteratively.

This created a list of trigger box colliders along the route that I could then use to check the user's progress along the track. I track the player's progress using an OnTriggerEnter function.

With the following script, the player can't progress unless they hit each trigger sequentially. In the future, it might be more fair to give a time penalty instead, but with only 48 hours, making the player hit every single one was all I could really do.

This was how I created the tracks for the game. I inputted a JSON file with the coordinates for the bezier curve, drew the mesh, installed checkpoints, and viola! A racetrack.

Game Jams How I developed a dynamically generated track


 I wanted to put together a quick guide to hosting your game for people to play. I'll make it quick. First, I am assuming here you are using Unity. Other game Engines work similarly, but I don't know exactly how to get this process working in Unreal or Construct. 

# Step 1: Build the Project

With your game done, It's time to build it into an exportable and playable format. Unity offers the ability to build it to windows, mac, linux, android, etc. I really prefer though that, unless you have a really good reason, try and build your game for web. Web players are much more accessible for people playing your game, and It's much easier and safer than downloading executables. I will still help with setting up a downloadable build, because the web builder isn't always perfect.

Go to File>Build Settings. First, make sure you add all your scenes to the 'Scenes in Build' window. Below that, you will see all the Platforms supported. If you don't see yours, You have to use the Unity Hub or Unity's download page to download the support. Select Either 'PC,Mac & Linux Standalone' or WebGL. 

'PC,Mac & Linux Standalone' Will build a downloadable version of your game. WebGL will create a folder with an index html page, as well as some code to host your project on that page. It is not playable as is, but if it's running on a hosting platform it will.

# Step 2: Hosting

Having a website on your filesystem obviously won't work. So let's look at services to host your game. I'll list instructions for 3 different hosting solutions. There are many more, but I don't have all day. 

## GameJolt

Gamejolt is a great game hosting site with a lot of nifty features. First, create an account or log in. 

In the top right, click on your account Icon and select 'Add Game'.

Mark your game as 'Devlog', then  fill in a title, a URL path (name of your game as it will appear in the URL link) and the tool you used to make the game. Be sure to turn off the partner system. Add a description, a header, some screenshots, set the maturity settings and click 'Save and Next'. Turn off ads, and decide if you want feedback on your game. Cool. Now you have a game, now you just need to upload it. On your computer, find the folder you saved your web build in and compress it to a zip file. Back on Gamejolt, go to your new game's dashboard and click on Packages under Overview/Setup.

Click "publish Release" and you are good to go! Click 'View Game Page' to play it and verify everything worked. 

## Itch.io

Itch.io Is a similar platform to GameJolt and offers a lot of the same features. They will also be hosting the majority of the jam in place games. To upload your web game on itch.io, make an account or log in, then click on the dropdown arrow in the top right and click 'Upload New Project'. Fill out the information.

When you reach 'Upload',  find the folder you saved your web build in and compress it to a zip file. Click 'Upload Files' and upload that zip file. Add Details, Genre and Tags. When you're all done, click 'save' and it will take you to your new game page!

## Github Pages

Want to host it yourself? No problem. Github pages is one of the cleanest and most customizable solutions. I only recommend this option if you are familiar with git.  Create a repo for either the whole project, or just the web build files. Either way will work, but making a repo specifically for the build skips a couple steps. Push up the repo.

 Go to the repo in github and then click on the settings tab. Scroll down to Github Pages and change the source to your master branch if the repo is just the build files. If you uploaded the source code and the build files, add the build files into a folder in the root named 'docs'. Then, In the Github Pages settings, change the source to 'docs'. You should get a github pages link and just like that, your game is live!

How To Host your Jam Game on the web in 2024


 I've had a couple of friends and family reach out to get some answers on what this AI stuff is all about, and I figured that I'd write it all down and share it all at once. I think that AI is a broad and super fascinating subject, and I fancy myself as something of an AI expert myself. 

## What is 'AI'? 
The term 'AI' is short for Artificial Intelligence and has become a blanket term for a wide range of technologies. I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time gatekeeping what defines a technology as 'AI', if it should be anything from 'if' statements to humanoid robots doing flips. The discussion recently of AI tends to focus on the following areas: 
- Machine Learning
- Generative AI 
- Big Data
I am making some very large generalizations here, and I encourage you to go and look up these and other tangential topics for yourself, I'm just focusing on the topics that seem to be most talked about on Linkedin when the generic term 'AI' is used. 

### Machine Learning
Of the subject areas mentioned, Machine learning is the oldest of them. Machine learning, in it's most oversimplified definition, is a function that is given an input, analyzes it and then produces an output that is not defined by any explicit instruction. 

An example of this in action would be to imagine a neural network that is being trained to play rock, paper, scissors. Traditional code might have the function produce one of the 3 by selecting it at random, or selecting whatever the opponent used last turn. A neural network (ML) would 'learn' by playing several rounds, and after a given amount of rounds of rock, paper, scissors, it would give outputs based on what is most likely to win. 

In the real world, Machine learning is used in applications from dynamic product pricing, facial recognition, self-driving vehicles, handwriting readers, personalized ad placement and social media algorithms. 

### Big Data 
Big data is a broad term that applies to taking large, often unorganized and unstructured data, and processing useable information out of it. An example of big data might be taking thousands of Tweets about a given topic and producing a sentiment analysis from that topic. Big data tends to find odd relationships when the dataset grows so diversely. A company might determine that ads for their product become more effective at a time of day that seems random. They could have determined that all of their users have a similar daily routine and because of that, their users become to receptive to the product at a similar time. 

 Big Data is similar to strip mining minerals. Giant machines crunch and scrape millions of tons of rock and dirt, then ship it to a factory where it can be separated and refined to a useable resource. 

### Generative AI 
Gen AI has been the bell of the ball recently. This term covers any AI model that takes in an input and produces a output based off of it's training data. Gen AI models are growing very diverse, with the most popular applications being image, text, video and audio generation.

Open AI's ChatGPT is the best example of this subject area. It's LLM (Large Language Model) has nearly become synonymous with the blanket term 'AI' and became one of the most successful consumer applications in history. ChatGPT is a multi-model AI. This means that it can take in more than one input (audio, text, image) and produce more than one output (image, text).  Multi-model applications are rising in popularity and offer a very generalized way to interact with AI. 
Another practical application of Gen AI is Github CoPilot. CoPilot offers complex and dynamic code completion for developers, saving us a trip to stack overflow in most occasions. 

The two examples above (as well as the majority of Gen AI services out there) utilize LLMs. Large Language Models can be dismissively described as a glorified auto-complete. Given a string of words, an LLM determines what the next  most likely word or phrase should come next. If I say the phrase: 
>"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, how I wonder..."

Can you guess what comes next? Given that you've probably heard or seen this nursery rhyme, you would assume the rest of the text should be "what you are." That's what LLMs do. 
## Applications of AI 
Browsing Linkedin these days will have no shortage of ways that AI is used in the business world. I've seen everything from using ChatGPT to run an entire business, Personal Assistants, AI clones, Customer Service bots, business analytics, financial advisors, and even fully fledged application development. 
This is my opinion, but most products and services that utilize Generative AI are complete horseshit. We are in the wild west of technologies like Gen AI, and a lot of products and services using this will become obsolete or bankrupt in a few years. 

Big Data and Machine learning have thrived in the business and tech world and are used just about everywhere now. Machine learnings more 'flashy' applications include computer vision, like  Tesla's self driving functionality and facial recognition as well as advances in robotics, like Boston Dynamic's Spot rover.  

### When should you use AI?
Abraham Maslow's infamous quote 
> If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail

Applies so well to the broad use of AI. Gen AI, big data and machine learning are all incredible powerful tools, but are not always the best solution for every single problem. 

Take a  customer service bot for instance. Sometimes, all a user might need is a generic traditional script based flowchart to get to the information that they need. Companies should consider the amount of time, energy, training, cost and possibility for error when scoping out a project like this. A simple if statement tree is going to be magnitudes less expensive than a custom pretrained LLM customer service model. 

To determine if AI is a good fit for a given problem, consider all of the options, consider what a given technology can bring, and be aware of the costs. AI runs about as efficiently on computer hardware as an engine full of cheese. Each image that you generate for your new company logo costs nearly 20 cents in computer runtime. 

#### Best uses for Gen AI 
I have found that the generic, all-purpose apps like ChatGPT are great to throw ideas off to, or proofread a draft. However, in a business application, specialization is key. If you are looking to create an app that writes tweets in perfect Iambic Pentameter , It would be more scalable and clean to train a specialized Large Language model on basic English and Shakespeare's writings, instead of using the massive, expensive, generalized models like Chat GPT. 

#### Best uses for Big Data/ Machine Learning 
Applications of big data and machine learning often go hand-in-hand. large quantities of data are often simplified to a format that a machine learning model can interpret. From here, any sort of business application can be augmented. Machine learning thrives in situations that structured input is not always available, or multiple decisions with enormous amounts of variables need to be made in short periods of time. 


In conclusion, Use the right tool for the job (it isn't always an AI solution), Use specialization where you can, and be intentional with your data and outcomes. 

My own personal approach to what AI means and what applications it realistically can be best applied for.

No BS Overview of AI


This is a remake of my [original resmue writer](bytebistro.dev/posts/ai-resume-writer) 

A friend of mine is looking to get back out there and test the job market. It hasn't gotten any easier to find a new job since I made the first version, but I knew there were ways I could improve my script. The original was admittedly a good idea with poor execution. It did what it needed to, but it wasn't very robust. I created version 2 to address some of those concerns, make it more user-friendly, and make the outputs more accurate. Version 1 had an issue where it would confuse the users' existing job experiences with the job requirements. That appears to be fixed in this version. I also added a second Open AI call that generates a cover letter. In my current position, I have read a lot of cover letters, and ones written by AI are pretty easy to spot. I'd love to collaborate with a good prompt engineer to explore ways to make the cover letter match the user's writing style and voice. 


Running it is similar to before, you just need to make sure that Pandoc is downloaded. If you don't have that, you can disable the 
line that executes the command to generate the pdf and just use the .md resume.

Revisiting My GPT-Powered Resume Writer


 A long time ago, a co-worker showed me a project they had been working on that would gather website data from major grocery store chains near them and return the lowest priced item among the available stores. I thought that was pretty neat, but I didn't spend a whole lot of time really thinking about that project. As it turns out, I should have paid closer attention, because web scraping is one of the most powerful tools a dev can use. 

Much later, I developed two interesting projects that utilize web scraping to different degrees. In this post, I want to quickly highlight the projects that I developed then talk more about web scraping and why I am mad at myself for not adding it to my toolkit earlier in my career.

## Project 1 
I wanted to have a load of good, meaningful content delivered to my inbox every day, so I created a cloud function that scrapes the top 20 posts on Hackernews and sends them to my slack. Why not just use the site? Good question, I don't know. My brain likes operating out of slack, and getting the links sent to me every morning, it just becomes part of my routine to click on the articles that interest me.

## Project 2
The other project gets my local public transit data and displays times for trains on an Adafruit [Magtag](https://www.adafruit.com/product/4800) So I can do my best to stop being late for the train every single morning.

## What is web Scraping? 

**My definition:** Web scraping is the process of mining useful information from a web interface without physically viewing the website. 
**ChatGPT's definition:** Web scraping is the process of automatically extracting information from websites. This is typically done through software that simulates human web surfing to collect specific data from various web pages. It allows for the gathering of data in a structured format, like text, images, or other content, which is otherwise presented in an unstructured format within web pages. Web scraping is widely used for various purposes, such as data analysis, automated testing of websites, gathering information for research, or monitoring changes to web content. Essentially, it turns the information available on web pages into usable data for various applications.

Wow, I'm sort of worried that my definition starts off almost exactly the same as ChatGPT... 

Regardless, the important takeaway here is that it can turn any website into an unwilling API. This enables any website on the internet to be turned into a data source. That means that you could make a recipe database and ditch the ads, SEO fluff and pictures, or track prices of a specific item, You could send a slack or discord message any time your favorite blogger posts a new article. 
## Further Ideas for how to utilize web scraping
The next project that I would like to use this for is some sort of data collection, similar to my friends grocery store idea. Some service that runs daily that could gather web data from an unstructured source and compile it into something interesting. I'm also working on a demo that creates interactable game worlds based off of site data from wikipedia. Not sure what I'd do with that but I think that it's at least an interesting Idea.

Webscraping and me


This blog has sort of become a personal pet project instead of a professional pet product. It's probably obvious by now that a lot of the content here doesn't exactly seem all that human. That is part of a bunch of projects that I've been working on that was trying to push what OpenAI's API could do. I'm not really sure why, but it felt interesting to try. I was getting sick of one-shot products. An example of that would be any blog made right after chat GPT came out (I am guilty of this for sure.) At this point in OpenAI's global takeover, you've probably tried something like this too.

The blogs thus far and the short stories after are tests of running a series of prompts to create the content. Instead of asking "write me a blog post about X", I ask it 5 prompts: "write a summary for a blog about x, write an introduction for that blog, write a middle, write an FAQ, " etc.

A common pitfall that I've seen as AI tools have matured has been the tendency to push quantity over quality. There have been so many efforts to produce _as much content as possible_. My lesson from this little experiment has been to instead use AI tools to produce _content that you could never do just on your own_. AI should augment, assist, or automate. Frankly, even despite my best efforts and an expensive API key, AI on it's own cannot produce a finished product. I didn't hate any of the stories, but they were just... hollow, or boring, or sometimes contrite.

I could spend a long time talking about how just producing content for the sake of producing content is quietly contributing to several negative outcomes, so I will, but in a different blogpost. I think that a key takeaway here is that for now, AI can produce content, but not always 'art'.

Amidst the ruin, will their collective spirit bloom into a beacon of hope guiding them towards the end of their relentless journey? Will the iron bloom of resilience dare to blossom amidst the desolation? The answers lay folded within the unfolding chapters of 'Iron Bloom in the Midst of Ruin'.Just past dawn, a harsh command came screeching through the dank air, jolting the men from their restless sleep. It was time to advance, time to drive further into the belly of the beast. The men ambled to their feet, their eyes heavy, bodies scarred, yet spirits defiant. Their journey was a living testament to the relentless spirit of mankind, battling all odds, pushing the boundaries of courage.

Colonel Wirth stood at the head, his eyes scanning the battlefield ahead, a wasteland etched with lines of sorrow and spirits of fallen comrades. In the darkest corners of Tharion, where neon lights barely scratched the surface of the city's grime, there brooded a young man named Soren. A former soldier turned reluctant mechanic, he had spent years patching up engines and hiding the scars of a war he'd seen too much of. His life was a reflection of the city - disheveled and gray, resiliently clinging to life amidst the shadows of larger forces. But a stirring deep within him refused to let him fade into the obscurity of his circumstances.
